UT Permian Basin survived a late charge from Cameron and held on to win 66-65, their first conference win on the season.
The Falcons (4-19) came out shooting in the first quarter. They would build a 10-2 lead with
Khali Pippins-Tryon and
Juliette Akinwole pitching in four points each. Akinwole would finish the quarter with eight points, outscoring the Aggies (7-16) to give the Falcons an 18-7 lead. The Aggies would try to chip away at the lead but a
Chynna Rivera lay-up followed by a Pippins-Tryon three pushed the lead to a game-high of 12. The Aggies would answer with back to back threes of their own, but
Lemia Ntor-Ue righted the ship with a three of her own. The Aggies continued to chip away but the Falcons would have answer and went into the half up 32-26.
A three-point play by the Aggies would open the third quarter cutting the lead down to a possession. The Falcons would swing the momentum though with four consecutive points from Pippins-Tryon to push the lead back to seven. The Aggies continued to battle cutting the Falcon lead down to just one on three occasions before another Pippins-Tryon three regained momentum. A bucket from Akinwole pushed the lead back to eight before the Aggies would hit a buzzer beater sending the game to the fourth quarter with the Falcons up 54-48. Baskets from Ntor-Ue and Pippins-Tryon on back to back possessions made it a 10 point Falcon lead early in the fourth. Free throws and the Falcons not scoring for to minutes made it a four point game before Nyachristmas Puok broke through to make it 60-54. Another jumper by Pippins-Tryon with three minutes to go gave the Falcons a 63-56 lead. The ensuing possession the Aggies knocked down a three and after a Falcon turnover, they'd knock down another and suddenly it was a one point game again.
Sarah Bersang would answer with a basket and Ntor-Ue would sink a free throw to push the lead back to four. With 43 seconds the Aggies would hit a three making it once again a one point game at 66-65. The Aggies would have one last opportunity but Maighan Hedge lost the ball and Pippins-Tryon scooped it up to run out the clock holding on for the heart stopping 66-65 win.
Pippins-Tryon scored a season-high 24 points on 8-14 shooting including 10 in the second half. She would also go 3-4 from three-point range and was a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line. Akinwole also had a big game dropping 14 points while grabbing six rebounds on 6-8 shooting. Coming off the bench, Ntor-Ue scored eight points to go along with five rebounds. In th second half the Falcons shot 57.14 percent from the field.
The Falcons are home once again Saturday as they take on MSU Texas and look for their second conference victory on the season.
