UT Permian Basin improved to 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play Thursday night behind the terrific play of their backcourt lead by
Holly Hemmeline and
Kayla Galindo. Four Falcons scored in double digits as they never trailed by more than a point in the 74-62 win. Hemmeline led the team with 17 points while adding in five rebounds.
The opening quarter turned out to be a high scoring one as both teams exchanged baskets early as they ended tied at 17. The second quarter was much of the same with neither team able to grab momentum for more than a possession or two. The Falcons (5-3, 2-0) never trailed though throughout the first half. Through the opening 20 minutes it was 31-29 Falcons in a tightly contested battle.
The Mustangs (2-3, 0-1) had momentum early in the second half and took their first lead of the ballgame at 34-33.
Jada Berry answered with a three and all the Mustangs led was for 56 seconds. The Falcons pulled away keyed by a pair of Galindo threes and they pushed the lead to as many as 10 in the third. The Mustangs started the fourth by cutting the lead to six but Hemmeline answered right back with one of her five threes. A steal and lay-up by
Jordan Rogers on the next possession gave the Falcons their largest lead at 11. The Falcon lead got no closer than eight down the stretch before the final horn sounded.
Galindo finished with 14 points along with six assists and four rebounds. Rogers added 12 points off the bench and
Lemia Ntor-Ue added 10 off the bench as well.
Kristian James finished the night with seven points and seven rebounds as the Falcons out rebounded the Mustands 41 to 36, including 17 offensive rebounds.
The Falcons are off until next week when they play their final home contest of 2019 when they take on Cameron in a conference match-up.
