Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Historic Defensive Quarter Carries Falcons to LSC Road Victory

UT Permian Basin Women's Basketball had a historic first quarter allowing the fewest points in a quarter in program history.  The Falcons held Texas A&M – Kingsville to just three points in the first quarter and 11 total for the first half as they won a defensive battle 48-43.

The Falcon (6-4, 3-1) defense was stifling in the first quarter of action.  They scored the first 11 points of the contest while holding the Javelinas (1-5, 0-4) to 1-for-16 shooting, including 0-for-9 from three-point range.  The Falcons nearly shutout the Javelinas for the quarter before a free throw at the 1:31 mark got the Javelinas on the board for the time.

A second quarter Javelina run cut the Falcon lead to five but the Falcons answered with an 8-0 run to bolster their lead.  Rory Carter knocked down a jumper with 19 seconds to go to give the Falcons a 24-11 lead heading into the half.

Yazmin Batch and Holly Hemmeline combined to push the Falcon lead to 16 early in the third quarter.  The Falcons pushed the lead to 19 after an Alexus Quaadman free throw, their largest lead of the game.  The Javelinas closed the gap with a 9-2 run to end the third quarter.  The Falcon offense struggled in the fourth quarter, not scoring until Hemmeline's three with 4:03 left to play to push their lead back to nine.  The Javelinas continued to chip away at the Falcon lead but it was too late as Hemmeline iced the game with a pair of free throws to hang on for the 48-43 win.

Hemmeline led the Falcons with 11 points while Carter chipped in 10 points off the bench.  The Falcon defense forced 30 turnovers while holding the Javelinas to 15-of-54 shooting.

The Falcons play one more before the calendar turns to 2020 when they take on Texas A&M International this Saturday at 1 p.m.
