Holly Hemmeline continued her hot start, scoring 26 points on 9-of-20 shooting and now leads the Lone Star Conference through one weekend of play with 22 points per game. She led a second half charge that brought the Falcons (0-2) back from a 24-point deficit but it was too much to overcome as the Falcons fell 86-78 to Colorado - Colorado Springs.
A hot start by the Mountain Lions put them out in front 12 in the early going but the Falcons bounced back. The teams traded baskets before the Falcons closed the opening frame on a 7-1 run sparked by a
Rory Carter three-pointer. Back to back baskets by
Alexus Quaadman put the Falcons ahead early in the second quarter. The Mountain Lions responded retaking the lead and slowly pulling away over the quarter and the game went into the half with the Falcons trailing 42-36.
The Falcons fell behind in the third quarter as the Mountain Lions pulled away from the free throw line, going 11-for-16 in the quarter. Hemmeline helped the cause with eight points in the quarter and a three by
Lemia Ntor-Ue kept the deficit at 15 heading into the final quarter. Hemmeline knocked down a three to open the quarter and after the Falcons continued to chip away,
Kayla Galindo's three made it a 75-68 game with five minutes to play. The Mountain Lions responded with sinking three free throws but Hemmeline answered with her own three. Another Hemmeline three and a
Jada Berry free throw got the deficit as low as five but the Mountain Lions hit their free throws down the stretch to stay ahead.
Along with her 26 points, Hemmeline had five rebounds and three assists. She had 19 points in the second half, going 5-for-9 from thee-point range. Ntor-Ue added in 14 points while Galindo chipped in 12 points and six assists.
The Falcons return home for their home opener this Monday at 7 against Arlington Baptist before hitting the road Thursday to face Dallas Christian.
