Marissa Aguilar each had career bests Friday night for UT Permian Basin volleyball, and the Falcons fought back in a five-set thriller to defeat Cameron 23-25, 28-30, 25-17, 25-21, 15-7.
After a close pair of games that went against the Falcons for a 2-0 deficit, the Falcons started to make their move midway through the third by winning six of seven points for a 13-10 lead behind a pair of kills from
Aquincia Strambler. UTPB closed out the set just as strong, winning eight of the last nine points, including the final two on service aces by
Isela Murillo, to claw back and win their first set of the night by eight points.
UTPB put together another solid rally midway through the fourth set, winning 11 of 14 points to storm ahead to a 20-12 advantage. The Falcons held the Aggies at bay by at least three points over the rest of the set, and won the four-point game on a kill by
Skyler Friel.
The Falcons rebounded once again after Cameron scored the first two points of the decisive fifth set. UTPB turned a 3-2 Aggie lead into a 10-4 advantage behind a 7-1 run to get some distance against CU. The Falcons completed the comeback by winning the final three points of the night; a kill by Strambler, a block from
Travana Matthews and an ace by Friel.
Strambler and Friel each had 13 kills to lead the Falcon offense. Matthews added 11 kills while hitting .333 on the night.
Isela Murillo stepped up big for UTPB, recording a double-double with 12 kills while hitting .257 to go with her team-leading 20 digs on the night.
Lucio surpassed her career high for assists in a match, ending the contest with a new all-time-best of 55 helpers as the Falcons hit .211 as a team on the evening.
Aguilar also set a new personal record on the night, collecting 19 digs on defense.
UTPB closes out its 2019 road schedule Saturday afternoon, taking on UAFS at 1 p.m. in Fort Smith, Ark.
