UT Permian Basin Football re-wrote the offensive record book Saturday night, closing out the season with a 70-14 blowout of Texas A&M-Kingsville at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa.
UTPB set numerous rushing records Saturday, including total rushing yards in a game (418), three players running for at least 100 yards in a game, and five total rushing touchdowns.
The Falcons also set school records for 617 total yards in a game, the first time the team has recorded over 600 yards in a game. The big offensive effort also marks the first time the team has recorded over 4,000 yards in a season.
The Falcons end the year with a 4-2 home record, the most home victories in program history.
"The offensive line was dominant, and that really allowed us to open up the playbook," said Head Coach
Justin Carrigan. "It was such an awesome night to see so many seniors shine and go out on top. Seeing
Jacob Granado scoring a touchdown was really cool, but watching
John O'Kelley give the ball to
Chris Hoad was the greatest thing I've seen in a football game."
After the Falcons deferred the coin toss to the second half, they forced an early Javelina turnover around midfield when
Demarr Hayes sacked Koy Detmer Jr. to force a fumble collected by
Dominique Varela. The Falcons marched down the field before Mathis found fellow senior
Ben Galaviz for the 34-yard touchdown, putting the Falcons up 7-0 early.
After forcing a Javelina punt on their next possession, the Falcon offense was pinned at their own one-yard-line.
Mathis got the Falcons out of the shadow of the goal post on an 11-yard QB sneak. The Falcons continued to pound the ball on the ground with
Marquis Simmons picking up 63 yards on four carries. Mathis kept it himself on an option play and ran up the left sideline for the 39-yard score to go up 14-0. The Javelinas wouldn't go quietly, scoring on an 11-play, 73-yard drive to get on the board.
After the teams traded punts, the Falcons took a shot on a free play after a Javelina jumped offsides. Mathis found
Kyle McBride in stride for a 50-yard bomb to the end zone putting the Falcons up 21-7. The Javelinas turned it over on downs on their next drive. The quick-strike Falcon offense struck again when Mathis found
Matt Zubiate up the middle. Zubiate drug a defender 15 yards before crossing the goal line for the 52-yard score and the 28-7 lead. The Falcons capped off the half with another touchdown on a 13-yard run by
Caleb Forrest with just 32 seconds remaining in the half.
The Falcons ended the half with a bang as
John O'Kelley picked off the final play of the half and lateraled possession to
Chris Hoad at the 21-yard-line to finish the return. The pick-six put the Falcons up 42-7 and was the second touchdown in Hoad's prolific career.
Davion Sutton did all the work on the opening drive of the second half. The senior ran the ball three times for 75 yards, finishing the drive with a 35-yard score. The Falcons drove down the field at the end of the third quarter with Mathis sliding at the one-yard line to end the quarter. That set up a one-yard blast by senior defensive lineman
Jacob Granado for his first career touchdown and the 56-7 lead.
The Falcons continued to pour it on with
Dylan Krans throwing a 16-yard touchdown to
Rocky Barnes for another score. It didn't stop there as Sutton barreled in his second touchdown run from five yards out to make it 70-7.
The team's 70 points were the most in a game over the team's four year history, the 56 point margin of victory the most in team history, and the 42 points scored in the first half were the most in a half through 44 games.
Kameron Mathis ended his Falcon career throwing for three touchdowns and 183 yards on 10-13 passing. Mathis rushed 11 times for 103 yards and a score on the ground.
Davion Sutton led the Falcons with 148 yards rushing on 15 carries, averaging 9.9 yards per attempt, and a pair of TD's.
Marquis Simmons added 147 yards on 14 rushes, good for 10.4 yards per rush.
Caleb Forrest and
Jacob Granado each added a score on their lone carries of the day.
Kyle McBride led the Falcon receivers with four catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Zubiate added a 52-yard score down the middle of the field, while Galaviz had a pair of receptions for 38 yards and a score.
Rocky Barnes made his lone catch count, scoring late on a 16-yard pass.
Chris Hoad led the Falcon defense with 14 tackles in his final game, scoring to end the first half from 21 yards out. Hoad ends the season the Division II tackle leader with 157 total tackles this season, and is the active tackle leader across all NCAA Divisions with 526.
Frank Kriegbaum had 10 tackles out of the secondary for UTPB.
John O'Kelley had the team's lone interception, a pick that he returned 58 yards before handing off to Hoad.
