Kyree Elder and
Jacob Ledoux combined to shoot 17-27 on the night from the field with seven three pointers for 43 total points, but Angelo State used a run late in the second half to knock off UT Permian Basin 95-91 Thursday night at the UTPB Gym in Odessa.
The Falcons started the game out fast, running out to an 11-5 lead behind a 3-pointer from Ledoux and a pair at the line from Ledet.
Ledoux was hot to start the night, hitting his first five field goals of the game, including 3-pointers late in the first half that helped the Falcons climb out of a 32-22 point hole to get back within a point at 35-34.
Xavier Ledet capped the comeback at the end of the first half with a fastbreak layup for the 42-41 halftime lead with 14 seconds remaining in the half.
Neither team could miss coming out of the break. Elder & Ledoux each hit baskets and
Isaiah Hammons hit a three on the Falcons first three possessions of the second half, and Angelo State started out play with three-straight 3-pointers, two coming from Antonio Singleton.
Neither team was able to pull away in the back-and-forth affair in the second half; Angelo State led by six, 87-81, with under two minutes remaining, but
Adam Rivera hit threes on back to back possessions to bring th Falcons within a possession at 89-87 with 1:17 remaining.
But Angelo State had an answer for each UTPB score down the stretch. Daron Mims hit a jumper to go back ahead by four with under a minute to play. When
Isaiah Hammons hit a free throw, Singleton scored in the paint with 23 seconds remaining to stretch the ASU lead out to five, and Ronald Bell took advantage of a turnover with 15 seconds left for a fastbreak dunk to push the game out of reach.
Ledoux ended the game with a game-high 24 points, hitting 9-16 from the field with a 4-7 performance from 3-point range. Elder added 19 points, hitting 8-11 of his shots while shooting 50 percent (3-6) from the arc. Hammons added 16 points, while Ledet had a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds to go with a team-leading four assists. Rivera added 13 points off of the bench, hitting three triples on the night with seven rebounds.
Singleton led all Rams with 21 points for the game as one of six Angelo State players in double figures.
The Falcons continue their brief home stand Saturday with a 2 p.m. tip against Texas A&M Kingsville.
