Sarah Bersang scored a season-high 16 while
Khali Pippins-Tryon added 15 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome Midwestern State, Thursday in Wichita Falls. The Falcons (3-10, 0-5) would outrebound the Mustangs (4-8, 1-4), but the Mustangs shooting would carry them in the 79-57 final score.
The Mustangs would come out of the gate to take a 7-2 lead before the Falcons would go on a run. Bersang would hit a free throw that would be followed up by lay-ups from Pippins-Tryon and
Lemia Ntor-Ue to even the score. After tying the score at 10, an 11-2 Mustang run to close the quarter gave them a 21-12 lead after the first quarter. The Falcons would buoy themselves and after baskets by Bersang and Ntor-Ue would trim the deficit to just one. All the momentum would go back to the Mustangs, as they would close the half on an 8-0 run to make it 38-29 at the half.
An early Mustang lay-up would push their lead to double digits but Pippins-Tryon would hit a pair of free throws to return the deficit to nine. That was as close as it would get as the Mustangs would close the quarter making four of five plus four from the free throw line. They would carry that into the fourth quarter where the teams would largely trade baskets over the final 10 minutes.
Bersang would finish with a season-high 16 points on 6-12 shooting while adding three assists. Pippins-Tryon would go 7-8 from the free throw line in adding 15 points. Ntor-Ue would add 11 points and eight rebounds in the effort. The Falcons would outrebound the Mustangs 43-36, including 25 offensive rebounds, but shot only 10 percent from deep.
The Falcons travel to Lawton, Okla. in search of their first conference win on Saturday when they take on Cameron before returning home to take on Angelo State and Texas A&M Kingsville next week.
