Women's Soccer Hits the Road This Weekend

9/5/2018 9:58:00 AM

The UT Permian Basin women's soccer team started its season 0-2 at home this past week.  They take on Lubbock Christian on Thursday before taking on New Mexico Highlands University on Sunday.

After falling 3-0 to Colorado Mesa in a game which both teams had 15 shots, UTPB dropped a game Sunday to Texas A&M International 3-2.  Freshman Lea Walenta scored the first goal of the season with a nice finish while fellow freshman Kalee Overmeyer added another goal off of a cross late in the game.  It wasn't enough as UTPB allowed three second half goals for a 3-2 final.

UTPB heads to Lubbock on Thursday to start their week against Lubbock Christian in a non-conference showdown.  Lubbock Christian has started the season 0-2 at home with a pair of 2-1 losses.  They lost their opening game to #3 Colorado – Colorado Springs despite scoring first.  Against Colorado State – Pueblo they fell behind 2-0 early.  A late goal from Makenna Pate got Lubbock Christian on the board but it wasn't enough.  These two teams met last season in Lubbock with the Chaparrals winning 4-0.

The team then heads to Las Vegas, N.M. to take on New Mexico Highlands on Sunday.  NMHU has started the season 0-2 with a pair of losses to Texas teams.  They opened the season with a loss at Midwestern State 2-1 in overtime.

They followed it up by falling in their home opener to St. Mary's 3-2.  The game was tied 1-1 at the half before St. Mary's added a pair of goals 33 seconds apart to make it 3-1.  A late goal kept it close for the 3-2 final.  NMHU takes on Lone Star Conference opponent Eastern New Mexico tonight at home.  These two teams last played in 2015 when NMHU came away with the 3-1 win over UTPB in Las Vegas.
