UT Permian Basin volleyball roared back from a 2-1 deficit Saturday afternoon with big wins in the fourth and fifth sets to defeat Texas Woman's 25-20, 17-25, 17-25, 27-25, 15-11.
Having lost the previous two sets by eight points each, Texas Woman's jumped out to a large 13-7 start early in the fourth set.
The Falcons (10-7, 5-4) clawed their way back to tie the fourth at 14-14 behind five straight points with kills by
Travana Matthews and
Aquincia Strambler sandwiched around a block by Matthews and
Shelby Thomas.
UTPB found itself with a 20-18 lead after three straight included a pair of attack errors and a kill by Anaise Lucio, but Texas Woman's (11-7, 3-5) earned their first match point attempt at 25-24.
But the Falcons closed out the set strong, taking advantage of a mishit error that evened the score at 25-25 to win the fourth 27-25 behind a pair of kills by Strambler.
The Falcons reversed a 4-2 Texas Woman's lead in the fifth into a 7-5 advantage with three straight kills by Friel. After a TWU point, the Falcons rattled off six straight points with kills by Friel, Matthews and two from Aguilar to take a commanding 13-7 lead in the final set. The Falcons won the match on a final kill up the middle by Matthews for the 15-11 win.
Friel led the Falcons with 18 kills while Matthews was also in double figures with 11 winners on the day. Lucio paced UTPB with 22 assists, while
Sarah Vasquez led all players in the match with 36 digs.
