UT Permian Basin baseball used a five run top of the first on their way to an 8-3 road victory at University of the Southwest Wednesday afternoon in Hobbs, N.M.

A pair of two-RBI base hits in the first inning on a double by Skyler Palermo and a single from Lance Wasson helped UTPB to a 5-0 lead after just half an inning of action.

The Falcons grabbed three more runs in the top of the ninth, scoring on singles by Dalton Drury and Mike Fernandez. Tyler Vlasek drove home the ninth run on a sacrifice fly to right.

The Falcons scattered three runs in three different innings by six total pitchers. Tyler Averitt recorded the win in relief, striking out three with a hit and two walks issued.

Fernandez and Palermo each ended the game with a pair of hits, while Matt Gilmore led the team with a pair of runs scored.

The Falcons are off this weekend and return to action next week, hosting West Texas A&M in a Lone Star Conference Series.
