Khali Pippins-Tryon hit a pair of free throws at 1:31 of the first quarter to give the Falcons their largest lead of the night, a 19-4 advantage.
Despite hitting five 3-pointers in the first half and forcing 13 turnovers, the Mustangs rallied in the second quarter to out-score UTPB 20-12 to pull within three, 31-28, at the break.
After holding on to a slight lead for much of the third quarter, Midwestern State pulled away in the middle of the fourth for a six point, 59-53 advantage.
UTPB went on an 8-0 run as Pippins-Tryon made a layup, LaGrande hit four straight at the free throw line and scored a layup with 1:59 remaining in regulation for a two-point, 61-59 lead.
Micheline Mercelita scored on the next MSU possession with 1:01 remaining to tie the game at 61-61, and both teams missed their final field goal attempts.
Jackie Perez scored first in overtime on a layup off an offensive rebound, and UTPB held a two-point lead three different times in the final five minute session, but the Falcons went scoreless over the last 2:18 of overtime in the five point loss.
LaGrande ended the night with 23 points to lead all players, hitting 7-12 form the field and 5-9 form three-point range.
Pippins-Tryon added 20 points with an 8-9 night at the free throw line, and
Victoria Lopez had a team-best six assists.
Mercelita led the mustangs with 17 points and 10 rebounds on the evening.
UTPB stays on the road this weekend, tipping-off against Cameron in Lawton, Okla., Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
