Baseball Opens Weekend with DH against University of the Southwest

UT Permian Basin's bats went quiet as they dropped both games of a double-header to the University of the Southwest in Odessa.

The first game of the double-header went 11 innings instead of the scheduled seven. Southwest scored four runs off UTPB starting pitcher Andrew Loudermilk chasing him in the second inning. UTPB chipped away scoring a run in the third on a wild pitch and again in the fifth on a balk. In the sixth Chris Ortega had an RBI single then moved to third on a fielding error by the centerfielder. He then came into score on a single by Cooper Coe to make it a 4-4 game. UTPB's bullpen pitched great with Tyler Averitt and Cale Thornton combining for 5.1 innings and only allowing two base runners and striking out six. Alex Rivera struck out six in four innings before allowing a pair of runs in the eleventh. Lance Wasson tried to spark the rally with a lead-off double but that's all UTPB would get falling 6-4.

UTPB struck first in the second game. Dalton Drury was hit by a pitch before advancing on a wild pitch. Tylor Frailey then singled him in for the early 1-0 lead. Southwest picked up a run in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-1 lead. UTPB tied the score at two when Skyler Palermo scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth. J.C. Velasco broke the tie with an RBI single off reliever Nick Bartley in the sixth then Jesus Chavez singled in a pair in the seventh for a final score of 5-2.

Nine Falcons recorded a hit in the first game with Lance Wasson leading the way with two. Rivera took the loss in the first game dropping his record to 1-1 on the season while Nick Bartley took his first loss of the season in the second game.

UTPB plays at home Sunday against Newman in another double-header starting at noon.
