Baseball Walks Off for Sunday Split Against Newman

Some late heroics helped UT Permian Basin to split a double-header against Newman Sunday in Odessa.  A walk-off win in the second game gave UTPB their second win of the season.

Game one went scoreless into the fourth inning.  Mike Fernandez and Tyler Vlasek each singled to put two runners on with two outs.  Simon Clarke drove them in with a booming double off the left field fence to take the 2-0 lead.  In the top of the fifth, Newman loaded the bases with no outs.  Clay Druin hit a bases clearing double off starting pitcher Matt Symczak to give Newman the 3-2 lead.  After a Channing Williams sacrifice bunt, Brian Canfield drove another run in on a sacrifice fly off reliever Alex Rivera.  Newman added another run to make the score 5-2 and UTPB couldn't get anything going.

Newman struck first in game two in the third inning.  Williams singled to score Trevor Lace and grab the early 1-0 lead.  Starting pitcher Ivan Thomas held Newman to just that over five innings.  In the sixth the UTPB offense finally broke through.  With runners on first and second base and two outs, Tyler Vlasek singled to center field to score Dalton Drury, who reached on an error, to tie the game.  Despite loading the bases that's all the team would get that inning and went into the seventh tied at one.

Owen Bessette completed his second perfect inning of relief and turned it over to the offense.  With one out Chris Ortega doubled into the left field corner.  Drury followed that up with a walk-off triple to center field to give UTPB the 2-1 victory.

Clarke led the team in game one with a pair of hits and two RBI.  Matt Symczak took the loss a dropped his record to 0-2.  Zack Erdman picked up his first win on the year for Newman.  Ivan Thomas pitched five innings giving up only three hits and one run.  Owen Bessette picked up his first win of the season for UTPB with two perfect innings.  Quinton Bonnell lost his first game of the season.

UTPB plays at Abilene Christian Tuesday in Abilene before taking on Texas A&M – Kingsville in a four game series starting Friday at home.
