It was a dominating 103-74 team victory for #13 UT Permian Basin over Angelo State Thursday night in Odessa.
Daeshon Francis dominated on both sides of the ball scoring 22 points along with 14 rebounds and eight assists. Josh Morris finished with a team-high 24 points on 11-15 shooting with eight rebounds. James McPherson scored 21 going 5-8 from three-point range. Sammy Allen finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.
UTPB got off to a hot start grabbing an early 14-2 lead powered by seven points. It was a team effort with the team recording an assist on each of the first nine baskets and Amari Bryant registering an assist on six of the first seven baskets. UTPB led 18-4 before Angelo State started chipping away at the lead. Angelo was able to close the gap to 32-31 on a Daron Mims lay-up. The Falcons closed on an 18-7 run with James Kirksey hitting a three at the buzzer to make it 50-38 at the half.
UTPB didn't let Angelo gain any momentum opening the second half on a 14-3 run with a total team effort registering an assist on the first six field goals. Kirksey hit a lay-up to make it 66-48 with 13:44 to go but that was the closest the game would get. UTPB continued to pull away with more team basketball with Francis putting the exclamation point on the game with a dunk on the assist from Andres Villa to make it 85-63.Â
UTPB finished the night 38-66 from the field with 31 assists. The team out rebounded Angelo 48-28 dominating the battle in the paint while scoring 58 points in the paint. Bryant finished with eight assists and Andres Villa added in 10 points off the bench.
Kirksey led Angelo State with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ja'Michael Brown finished with 13 points and eight assists with four steals. Angelo State was held to 41.3 percent shooting and only shot 17.4 percent from three-point range, including 1-12 in the second half.
UTPB finishes its home schedule on Saturday against Texas A&M – Kingsville before heading on the road for the final week of the regular season.
