UT Permian Basin volleyball responded to losing the first two sets against West Texas A&M 25-18 by rallying to take the third set 25-19, but the Lady Buffs claimed the match with a 25-20 fourth set win Tuesday night in Lone Star Conference action.
Trailing by two sets, the Falcons stepped up in the third. Trailing 16-14, the Falcons rattled off five straight points with four errors by West Texas A&M and a kill from
Travana Matthews to take a 19-16 lead.
West Texas rebound to pull within a point at 19-20, but the Falcons closed out the set by scoring the final five points, two on kills from Matthews and
Aquincia Strambler and one on a block by Strambler and
Skyler Friel for the five point victory.
The Falcons went ahead in the fourth set, taking a 13-9 lead on kills by Strambler and
Haleigh Robinson.
UT Permian Basin led as late in the fourth at 19-18 after two straight points, and tied the set at 20-20 on a WTAMU service error, but West Texas A&M finished the match with the final five points of the night to take the fourth set and the match win.
Matthews led the Falcons with 13 kills, hitting .289 on 38 total attempts. Friel added 10 kills on the night for UTPB.
Analise Lucio paced UTPB with 20 assists while
Kiera Granado added 16 assists, and
Sarah Vasquez led UT Permian Basin with 32 digs on the night.
The Falcons are back on the road this weekend, traveling for matches at Texas Woman's Friday night and at Texas A&M Commerce Saturday afternoon.
