UT Permian Basin volleyball picked up a split in conference play this weekend, coming back Saturday afternoon to grab a 3-0 sweep of MSU Texas 26-24, 25-23, 27-25.
The Falcons (12-11, 7-7) took control of the first set late in the game, earning match point after a kill by
Megan Ashton. A pair of Mustang points tied the match at 24-24, but the Falcons picked up the set victory with a block by
Haleigh Robinson and
Skyler Friel, and a kill by
Analise Lucio for the 26-24 win.
UT Permian Basin had to rally in game two after falling behind 10-5 early in the set. They made their big run with six straight points to take an 18-17 lead on a block by Friel and Robinson. The Falcons earned set point with a kill by Matthews to lead 24-22, and won on another winner by Matthews for the 25-23 victory.
The Falcons required a come back in set three as well after falling behind 8-2 early on in the third. Winning six of the next seven points pulled UTPB within a point at 9-8, and the Falcons tied the set at 14-14 on winners by Lucio,
Aquincia Strambler and Matthews. They later broke a 21-21 tie with three straight points to reach match point, but a four-point run by the Mustangs left MSU Texas (5-18, 3-12) a point away from winning the set. But UTPB took over control with a kill by
Puava Tulau, block from Robinsons and Matthews, and won the match on an MSU Texas attack error for the 27-25 win.
Matthews and Strambler each led the Falcons with 10 attacks, while
Kiera Granado had a team-high 17 assists.
Sarah Vasquez led all players in the match with 18 total digs for UTPB.
The Falcons are back home Tuesday night, hosing West Texas A&M at 6 p.m. in Lone Star Conference action.
