Despite a heading into the fourth quarter tied at 20, UT Permian Basin football fell to Angelo State 44-20
The first quarter was a defensive struggle for both teams. The only offense either side could get going was a 35-yard field goal by Connor Flanigan to give the Rams a 3-0 lead. The Rams would have good field position after an interception but Payne Sullins would be stopped on fourth down to give the Falcons the ball back. The Rams would open the second quarter with a drive deep into Falcon territory but
Diameon Brewer would intercept the Sullins pass and get the ball back for the Falcons.
Null would open the ensuing drive with a 20-yard pass to
Kristian Brown. A few plays later he would hit a streaking
Baylon Ware for 34 yards to put the ball on the 25-yard-line. The very next play, Null hit
Ben Galaviz in the corner of the end zone for the 25-yard score and a 6-3 lead for the Falcons. The Rams would recover a fumble deep in Falcon territory to set up a four-yard touchdown run by Tyrese Nathan. The Falcons would be stopped on fourth down on their next drive. On the following drive, Sullins would find Keke Chism for a 21-yard score to make it 17-6 Rams. Â
The Falcons would drive down the field just before the end of the half. Null would go 4-4 for 72 yards finding
Kyle McBride from 34-yards out to cut the lead to 17-13 with 40 seconds on the clock.
After holding the Rams to a three-and-out to start the half, the Falcons got their offense working. Giles and
Marquis Simmons got the ground game working running for a combined 38 yards while Null threw for 37 yards before finding
Mitchell Leonard in the corner of the end zone to take a 20-17 lead half way through the third quarter. The Rams would answer with a nearly six-minute drive that would end with a 26-yard field goal by Flanigan to tie the game at 20.
The Rams would score next when Sullins would hit Larry Johnson from 43 yards out to go up 27-20. They would score again when Carsen Cook would find Weston McIntire to go up 34-20. On the Falcon drive, Null would be intercepted by Hunter Kyle and returned for a touchdown to expand their lead to 41-20. An 18-yard field goal would add to their lead and make it 44-20. Â
Null would finish the night 32-47 for 409 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. McBride would set a school-record with 11 catches along with 142 yards and a score. Giles paced the ground game with 75 yards.Â
Chris Hoad led the Falcons with 17 tackles.
The Falcons are on the road next week as they head to Portales, N.M. to take on Eastern New Mexico.
