Falcons Hold Off Mustangs in 59-57 Win

UT Permian Basin women's basketball led by as many as 11 in the second half, and Midwestern State missed a chance to tie the game with under a second left as UTPB won its first Lone Star Conference game at home Saturday afternoon in a two point, 59-57 win over the Mustangs.

The Falcons led 21-14 at halftime after holding Midwestern State to just six points in the second quarter and just 4-29 shooting (13.8 percent) combined in the first half.

Khali Pippins-Tryon was a perfect 5-5 from the field in the second half with 13 points, helping the Falcons to a 39-28 lead as part of back-to-back 3-pointers with Sierra LaGrande with 2:10 to play in the third quarter.

Midwestern State out-scored the Falcons 24-17 in the fourth quarter despite UTPB leading by 10 points with 1:28 remaining. MSU score nine of the final 10 points of the night and were fouled on a 3-point attempt with .7 seconds remaining while down 59-56, but missed the first two of three attempts in the two-point loss.

LaGrande led the Falcons with 17 points, hitting 4-8 from 3-point range on the night. Pippins-Tryon ended with 13 points, hitting 5-6 for the day and tied for the team lead with three steals. Jasmine Spriggins was 3-4 beyond the arc with 11 points and seven rebounds. Kayla Bretherton had nine points and nine rebounds.

Jasmine Richardson had 12 points to lead the Mustangs.

UTPB hosts Arlington Baptist Monday night and is on the road next weekend, traveling for away games against Texas A&M - Kingsville and Angelo State.
