Big Day from Pippins-Tryon Not Enough against Eastern New Mexico

Despite forcing 22 turnovers the UT- Permian Basin women's basketball team fell to Eastern New Mexico 68-65 in Odessa.

Khali Pippins-Tryon led the Falcons offense with 23 points while pulling down six rebounds and three steals. Victoria Lopez added 14 points with four assists and five steals in the effort.

The Falcons played from behind early getting into foul trouble in the first quarter. The Greyhounds scored 10 of their 17 first quarter points from the free throw line to grab a 17-12 lead.

Kayla Bretherton and Sierra LaGrande opened the second quarter with back to back threes to grab the lead. After a LaGrande three, Lopez hit a jumper to give the Falcons a 27-21 lead with 4:12 to go in the half. The teams traded baskets before Lopez hit two free throws in the final 30 seconds to give the Falcons a 34-30 lead going into the half.

At the half the Falcons had held the Greyhounds to 7-31 shooting from the field for 22.6 percent and forced 10 turnovers.

Both teams traded baskets the entire third quarter. After Daeshi McCants hit a three on the first possession neither team held a lead higher than three for the rest of the quarter. The Falcons ended the quarter trailing 47-46.

The Greyhounds opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run to grab an eight point lead. After a Falcon time-out they answered with a 9-0 run of their own to grab the lead. From there both teams traded baskets but the Greyhounds connected on their free throws to keep the game out of reach. A Pippons-Tryon basket and free throw cut the lead to one with six seconds left but Brandi Gomez hit two free throws to pull away.

LaGrande scored 12 on the afternoon for the Falcons connecting on four three-pointers.

The Falcons couldn't contain McCants who scored 20 points and grabbed 19 rebounds. Gomez added 17 points off the bench for the Greyhounds.

The Falcons hit the road next week with a game at West Texas A&M on Tuesday before traveling to Texas Woman's on Thursday.
