A cold stretch to end the first half cost UT Permian Basin a chance to make a comeback as Angelo State picked up an 86-57 victory Saturday afternoon in San Angelo, Texas.
Angelo State was a perfect 13-13 at the free throw line in the first quarter, playing over seven minutes in the bonus after UTPB got in early foul trouble to start the game.
Khali Pippins-Tryon led UTPB with seven points in the first half on 3-5 shooting from the field.
The Falcons used a 9-2 run at the start of the second quarter to trim a 15-point ASU lead to get within six points at 26-20 four minutes into the quarter. A six-minute scoring drought to end the half combined with a 15-0 Angelo State run gave the Belles a 41-20 lead at the end of 20 minutes.
Kayla Bretherton and Pippins-Tryon each scored nine points in the second half as UTPB out-scored Angelo State 23-22 in the third quarter.
Pippins-Tryon led UTPB on the day with 16 points and a pair of 3-pointers. Bretherton added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Keanna Kelly led Angelo State with 19 points off the bench as the Belles bench out-scored UTPB 38-7 on the afternoon.
ASU connected on 53 percent of its shots on the day to just 32 percent for the Falcons. Angelo State held a 42-32 rebound advantage and out-scored UTPB 44-30 in the paint.
UTPB returns home next week, hosting Texas A&M - Commerce Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.
