Despite a valiant second half comeback UT – Permian Basin women's basketball fell in overtime to Texas A&M – Commerce 88-77 in Odessa.
UTPB trailed by as many as nine in the third quarter before coming back to take a 57-56 lead early in the fourth quarter. Victoria Lopez lead the comeback scoring 15 points in the second half. Heather Crittenden hit a basket to lead 71-68 with 2:26 to play, but it proved to be the Falcons final points of regulation. Brianna Wise hit a three for Commerce with 55 seconds left in what ended up being the final points before overtime to tie the game 71-71
UTPB lead the turnover battle 23-15 but Commerce got the Falcons in early foul trouble and shot free throws throughout. Commerce dominated on the boards out rebounding UTPB 53-35 down low. Khali Pippins-Tryon kept the Falcons in the game with a block on a break-away with 1:03 left in regulation with the score 71-68 in favor of UTPB.
Sierra LaGrande led all scorers with 20 points shooting 6-11 from three-point range while Lopez added 18 points with seven assists. Kayla Bretherton added 14 points, Pippins-Tryon added 12 and Jackie Perez grabbed a game high 11 rebounds for UTPB.
Brianna Wise led Commerce with 21 points and nine rebounds with Artaejah Gay adding 17 points and seven rebounds.
UTPB plays Saturday at 2 p.m. against Tarleton State and then takes on Western New Mexico next Thursday, both at home.
