Falcons Suffer First LSC Loss of Year 84-83 at Angelo State

An 11-point deficit was too much to overcome as #6 UT Permian Basin fell to Angelo State University 84-83.

Daeshon Francis did everything he could to keep UTPB's winning streak at 11 games by scoring 30 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in the loss. Sammy Allen added 14 points and 17 rebounds while James McPherson had 17 points.

Angelo State came out firing in the first half with Will Adler leading the way hitting three three-pointers as they six of their first 10 as a team. UTPB was in foul trouble early allowing Angelo State to shoot 11-15 from the free throw line. UTPB was able to cut the deficit to 6 by the half.

After trailing by 11 with 15:44 to go UTPB went on an 11-2 run with James McPherson draining two three-pointers and Angelo State on a drought of no fields goals for roughly five minutes. A Garrett Baggett three-pointer with 6:40 remaining tied the score at 67, but Angelo struck right back with a three of their own from Adler.

UTPB big man Josh Morris then fouled out with 5:20 to go with Sammy Allen in foul trouble of his own with four. The teams then traded baskets and free throws and with less than 10 seconds on the clock, Kiair Crouch hit two free throws to put Angelo State up. McPherson was fouled attempting a three with 3.0 seconds left. After making the first two the third one bounced out. Allen was able to grab the rebound but his contested put back fell just short at the buzzer.

Francis's 30 points moved him into third all-time in UTPB men's basketball history with 913, passing Justin Bailey's 889 career points.

Adler lead the way for Angelo State with 20 points shooting 6-9 from three-point range while Crouch added 14 in the effort.

UTPB returns home next week and plays Texas A&M – Commerce on Thursday and takes on Tarleton State Saturday.
