Sammy Allen's put back at the buzzer from the low key lifted #11 UT Permian Basin to a 64-63 victory over #10 Texas A&M – Commerce in Odessa, putting them in the driver's seat for the Lone Star Conference regular season championship.
Allen's buzzer beater gave him 11 points on the night to go along with 16 rebounds and seven assists. Daeshon Francis, James McPherson and Josh Morris all added 15 points for UTPB.
UTPB trailed 12-7 before going on a 20-2 run to build a 12-point lead on the back of three three-pointers by McPherson. The Falcons then went cold for nearly 10 minutes to close the half before Amari Bryant and Garrett Baggett each hit a three to give them a 36-32 lead at the half.
Francis had a steal early in the second half with a huge dunk at the other end to push the UTPB lead to seven before another cold stretch hit them going nearly six minutes without a field goal. Both teams traded buckets and with a slim lead Commerce air balled a shot with 10.1 on the clock in regulation.
After a McPherson missed shot Allen grabbed the board and got the ball off just in time to give the Falcons the thrilling victory after an official's review.
Reggie Reid led the way for Commerce with 19 points on 10-10 free throw shooting while Dorian Armstrong added eight points with 14 rebounds. UTPB struggled in the second half from the free throw line only shooting 8-17 or 47.1 percent.
The win leaves UTPB and Commerce tied at the top of the Lone Star Conference at 7-1. UTPB's 64 points were the team's fewest in a game this season.
UTPB plays Tarleton State at home Saturday before taking on Western New Mexico next Thursday in Odessa.
