Rachel Dixon led the Falcons in kills for the fourth time this season while hitting a season-best .412 on 34 attempts with 16 kills and just two errors as UT Permian Basin volleyball rebounded after dropping the opening set to secure a 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 27-25, 28-26) victory over Cameron in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams Friday night in Odessa.
Trailing in the second set 10-7 after losing the first, UTPB roared back to live with a 10-1 run behind
Jordan Williams serving to lead by six points 17-11 and eventually cruised to a four-point 25-21 set win to even the match at one apiece.
In a see-saw third set that saw both teams lead by three points at different times, the Falcons tied the set with three straight points with kills from
Charlesia Jones and Dixon to tie the third at 20-20. UTPB served at set point leading 24-23, but would wrap the set up five points later on kills by
Caitlyn Guajardo and
Shelby Thomas for the 27-25 win.
The Falcons needed extra points in the fourth set to take the win despite leading 15-10 after four-straight points. A 5-0 Cameron run tied the set at 19 all, and after UTPB went ahead 23-19, five straight points for the Aggies left Cameron with set point to send the contest to a fifth set. But the Falcons came back to reach match point on a kill from Dixon, and later closed out the match on an ace by Dixon five points later as UTPB scored the last three points of the night.
Williams and Guajardo each recorded a double-double on the night, Williams with 16 digs and 13 kills and Guajardo with 13 kills and 10 digs.
Kiera Granado led the Falcons with 36 assists, and Williams led UTPB in digs.
The Falcons return to action Saturday afternoon, taking on Midwestern State in the UTPB Gym at 1 p.m.
