Falcons Strand Aggies to Salvage Saturday Split

Matt Szymczak entered with a runner on third and nobody out in the top of the seventh and recorded three straight outs to help UT Permian Basin baseball lock up a 5-4 win Saturday afternoon over Cameron at Roden Field. The Aggies earlier defeated UTPB 7-4 in the opening game of the day.

Szymczak got a groundout to short for the first out of the frame, and was an out away from the win with a swinging strike out on a 2-2 pitch. He ended the game on a ground ball to second for his first save of the season.

Tyler Houlihan helped UTPB kickstart a four-run bottom of the first inning with a base hit back up the middle to score Doug Clapperson. an outfield single by Mike Fernandez drove in Clapperton, and Mitchell Hazlett and Fernandez later scored in the inning for a 4-0 lead.

Cameron fought back to get its first run in the top of the second and added three more runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 4-4.

Randal Toribio came through big for UTPB in the bottom of the sixth, driving a two-out single into center to score Alex Fernandez from second for the go-ahead run.

UTPB led early in the opener as well, leading 3-0 after the first inning as Mike Fernandez drove in a pair and a William Bierlein double scored one, but Cameron scored seven runs in the final three innings, including a big five-run inning in the top of the sixth to take the 7-4 opener.
