Tyler Houlihan laid down a bunt back to the pitcher with the bases loaded and the throw to the plate was out of the catcher's reach, allowing
Jackson Pritchard to slide safely for the winning run in a 3-2 win over Texas A&M International in Odessa.
The Falcons got all three of their runs in the final third of the game. Trailing 2-0 without getting much together on offense up to that point,
Mike Fernandez changed the game around with a pinch hit, two-run homer on the first pitch he saw to help spark the UTPB offense.
Pritchard led off the ninth on a four pitch walk and moved into scoring position when
Bailey Giffen reached first on a sac bunt that was mis-fielded. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Fernandez, and then the bases were loaded by leadoff batter
Doug Clapperton on an intentional walk.
Chris Cano fought through putting Dustdevils on base for the Falcons, giving up eight hits and a pair of walks in six innings but allowed just a pair of runs as Texas A&M International stranded eight runners in the first four innings. He stranded one in the top of the first, got a ground ball back to him to end the second with runners on second and third, fielded a come-backer unassisted with runners on first and second in the third and got an inning-ending double play with a pair on in the top of the fourth.
Kameron Mathis picked up his first win of the season in throwing three shutout innings. He entered in the top of the seventh with runners on the corners and got three straight outs to leave them both stranded. Mathis allowed a hit and a walk with one strike out in the outing.
Houlihan led the Falcons with three hits on the afternoon, while
Dalton Drury and Prichard each had a pair of base knocks.
UTPB is back on the road this week, traveling to Alpine, Texas, for a single game at Sul Ross. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
