UT Permian Basin baseball scored 10 unanswered runs the the series opener against Texas A&M International Friday afternoon, taking game one 10-1, and the Dustdevils came back to score late facing extinction in game two to grab an 8-7 win over the Falcons at Roden Field.
UTPB grabbed the 3-1 lead in the first when Will Bierlein tripled to right center to drive in
Jordan Zazulak and
Grant Livornese.
Doug Clapperton doubled up the UTPB run total in the bottom of the fourth, homering to left field with
Alex Fernandez and
Randal Toribio aboard for the 6-1 advantage. Zazulak added two more runs in the frame with a two-run single back up the middle to lead 8-1.
Mitchell Hazlett added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth with a bases-loaded single to right that scored
Dalton Drury and Clapperton.
Matt Szymczak earned his second win of the season, tossing five innings of one-run ball while allowing three hits and three walks with one earned run.
Jake Albert walked one and struck out a Dustdevil in his two innings of shutout work.
UTPB came from behind in game two after Texas A&M International put up four runs in the third. The Falcons grabbed a pair back in the fifth on RBIs from
Chris Ortega and Clapperton, and pulled within a run in the sixth on a Zazulak jack to left field.
An Ortega base hit following a triple from Toribio tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, and the Falcons took the lead on a single by
Tyler Houlihan that score a pair. another extra base hit by Zazulak, a triple down the line into right field, scored Houlihan for a 7-4 advantage.
The Dustdevils scored a pair of unearned runs in the eighth, and took the lead for good in the ninth on a two-out two-run home run to left by Alexander Cabezas.
The Falcons are back in action closing out the series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
