#21 Falcons Rally to Power Past Angelo State 93-90

UT Permian Basin picked up a huge road victory Thursday night as the Falcons faced foul trouble and a tough-to-shake Angelo State squad for a late 93-90 victory in Lone Star Conference action in San Angelo, Texas.

The Falcons controlled play in the first half, never trailing in the opening 20 minutes and leading by as many as 10 before taking a slim 47-45 lead into halftime.

Angelo State took its first lead of the night by hitting four free throws to start the second half, claiming a 49-47 advantage early after halftime.

UTPB fought back, running out to out-score the Rams 14-1 over the next three minutes to go on top 61-50.

Angelo State clawed itself back with the next eight points, and tied the game at 63-63 on four straight points by Brandon Williams.

The Falcons stretched the lead back out to six points with a layup by Daeshon Francis, but the Rams followed with a 3-pointer by Quay King and later tied the game after a pair of baskets on consecutive possessions at 70-70 with 10:56 remaining.

Angelo State grabbed the lead twice, but James McPherson tied the game back up for the Falcons both times; first with a 3-pointer and the second time on a fast-break layup for an 80-80 tie.

McPherson came up big on back-to-back possessions, hitting a pair of 3-pointers around an Angelo State three for an 87-85 lead with 3:43 remaining.

After a pair of Angelo State free throws tied the game, the Lone Star's leading rebounder Sammy Allen hit a 3-pointer of his own with two minutes remaining for a 90-87 lead.

Francis and Prince Foster traded free throws to keep the game a three-point Falcons lead, and Francis hit the back end of a pair at the line with 57 seconds left for a four point, 92-88 advantage.

Foster hit a layup with 44 seconds left to close the game to a one-possession game, and the Falcons got the rebound on a missed 3-pointer with 14 seconds left but missed a pair at the free throw line.

With two seconds remaining, a double foul was called on Sammy Allen and Riley Chase, but Foster turned possession over with two seconds remaining when his inbound attempt went in the basket.

Renard Thomas hit the front end of a pair at the line after an Angelo State foul, and an ASU desperation 3-point attempt as time expired fell short for the three-point UTPB win.

McPherson led the Falcons with 29 points on the night, hitting 9-15 from the field and 8-13 from 3-point land. Francis added 17 points with an 11-14 night at the free throw line, and Zeldric King scored 13 points on 6-10 shooting off the bench. Allen grabbed 12 rebounds to lead all individual efforts on the night.

The Falcons head to Kingsville, Texas, this weekend to take on a hot Texas A&M - Kingsville team Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
