#10 Falcons Go the Distance in 90-81 Win at St. Edward's

#10 UT Permian Basin led for over 39 minutes Tuesday night and trailed just twice in a non-conference 90-81 road victory at St. Edward's in Austin, Texas.

The Falcons fell behind by a point on free throw attempts twice in the opening moments, but took the lead for what would be the last time on a Daeshon Francis layup with 18:33 remaining in the first half.

UT Permian Basin later scored six straight points, including four in a row on Zeldric King layups, for a 13-4 lead five minutes into the contest.

The Falcons led by as many as 14 points in the game late in the first, scoring six straight on 3-pointers by Garrett Baggett and Zeldric King to stretch an eight-point advantage out to 34-20 with six minutes remaining in the half.

St. Edward's cut that lead down to a one possession game over the remaining minutes of the first half, ending on a 21-10 run to trail by just three points, 44-41.

The Hilltoppers got within two points on their second possession of the second half, answering a pair at the line by Francis with a 3-pointer by Sean Phillips.

A nine-point UTPB run a few minutes later stretched the lead back out as an Amari Bryant triple, Francis layup, Sammy Allen three-pointer and free throw by Francis gave the Falcons more cushion with a 61-50 advantage with 15:02 to play.

St. Edward's was able to get within four points in the rest of the second half, but the Falcons shot 16-28 from the field (57 percent) in the second half, with Francis scoring 16 points after halftime, to close out the nine-point road win.

Francis led all players in the game and four Falcons in double figures with 21 points after playing just five minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. He shot 8-14 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds.

Allen added 13 points to go with a game-high 16 rebounds. It was his third double-double of the season and fifth time collecting double digit rebounds, all coming in the last six games. He also handed out a team-best seven assists.

James McPherson and Bryant each scored 14 points for UTPB on the night to round out the Falcons scoring in double-digits.

The Falcons combated a 24-13 turnover margin in St. Edward's favor by holding the Hilltoppers to 34 percent (22-64) from the field for the game.

UTPB is back home to close out the 2017 calendar year, hosting Jarvis Christian Saturday, December 30.
