Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Falcons Knock Off #17 Rams 73-72

Sammy Allen hit a pair of free throws with 59 seconds remaining to put UT Permian Basin men's basketball in the lead 73-72, and the Falcons forced a turnover in the final seconds to score its first win over a ranked opponent this season in a 73-72 win over #17 Angelo State Saturday afternoon in the UTPB Gym in Odessa.

Allen's free throws were clutch for a UTPB team that went the final 3:20 without hitting a basket. UTPB turned the ball over in its half of the court with 10 seconds to play and the shot clock running low, but Angelo State wasn't able to get anything coming out of a time out, moving the ball around outside the 3-point line before James McPherson forced the steal to run the clock out.

UTPB got out to a fast start in the game, scoring the first eight points of the night and leading by as many as 10 on a layup by Stephen Powell for a 16-6 lead.

Vinnie Abbondola hit a three with just under six minutes left in the first half to put the Falcons back on top by eight after Angelo State had turned the tides and earlier gone ahead, and another from downtown by Abbondola with 40 seconds remaining in the first put UTPB back in the lead 34-33 heading into halftime.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair as the Falcons trailed 10 different times in the final 20 minutes. Quay King and Brandon Williams carried Angelo State in the second half, combining for 25 points on a combined 9-11 half from the floor, and King hit 3-3 from beyond the arc.

UTPB used a team effort on offense, with all five starters ending the game in double-figures. Daeshon Francis led the Falcons with 16 points; Johnnie Lacy added 14 points and four assists. McPherson, Josh Morris and Allen all ended the game with 10 points, and Allen had a monster day in the paint with a game and season-high 19 rebounds.

UTPB is back on the road next week, traveling for games against Texas A&M - Commerce and Tarleton State.
