UTPB Volleyball grabbed its first conference win in its first season as Lone Star Conference members Saturday afternoon, sweeping Cameron 28-26, 25-12, 25-23 in Lawton, Okla.
Caitlyn Guajardo and
Kaitlyn Embrey each led the Falcon attack with 13 kills apiece on 31 attempts, each hitting over .300 on the afternoon as the team collectively hit .250 to just .131 for the Aggies.
UTPB needed to go extra in the first set as neither team was able to get any separation over the the opener. The Falcons eventually took set one with two straight points on a winner by Guajardo and a Cameron error for the 28-26 win.
Set two belonged to the Falcons as UTPB rode a nine-of-10 point rally towards the end to take a 15-9 lead to set point at 24-10, winning the set three points later on another Guajardo attack.
The third and final set of the afternoon closely reflected the opener, with neither team ever getting much separation. UTPB inched out the third set win on a pair of attack errors for the two-point win to close out the victory.
Puava Tulau paced the Falcon defense, being involved on six blocks in the three-set match. Mallory NIcholson led all players on the day with 37 assists, and
Sarah Vasquez had a team-high 13 digs.
