Falcons Can't Hold on to Weekend Magic, Fall 6-5 at UAFS

UT Permian Basin baseball came back from trailing twice Saturday afternoon, but weren't able to hold on to a five game win streak as UA Fort Smith scored twice in the 8th in its last trip to the plate for a 6-5 win at Crowder Field in Fort Smith, Ark.

Trailing 2-0 after a two-run first by the Lions, UTPB took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the second. Doug Clapperton drove in the team's first of the day by drawing a bases-loaded walk to score Mike Fernandez. Tyler Houlihan followed two batters later with a two-run double down the line into left that plated Alex Fernandez and Jackson Pritchard for a 3-2 lead.

UAFS benefitted in the fourth as two runs scored on a throwing error to go back ahead 4-3.

UTPB also picked up a pair of runs off of errors later in the game when Clapperton scored on a thrown away pickoff attempt to tie the game at 4-4, and pinch runner Latrell Harris came in when Jordan Zazulak reached on an error at third that put UT Permian Basin ahead 5-4.

Clean up batter Kasey Cooper put the Lions in the lead for good in the eighth with a two-run home run for the 6-5 lead.

Alex Fernandez went 2-3 at the dish to record half of the team's four hits on offense.

UTPB is back at home next weekend as the Falcons close out the home schedule with three games against Oklahoma Panhandle State.
