UTPB Opens Falcon Strong Weekend with 3-1, 8-0 Wins over OPSU

UTPB got 16 innings of unearned runs from its pitching staff Friday afternoon as the Falcons gave up a single unearned run in a pair of 3-1 and 8-0 wins over Oklahoma Panhandle State to open up their final home series of the season at Roden Field.

OPSU got the games first run on a ground out for an unearned run in the top of the first in the opener to take an early 1-0 lead.

On a blustery day in Odessa with the wind blowing in, a pair of dingers in the bottom of the fourth provided all of UT Permian Basin's offensive output. Tyler Houlihan continued his hot hitting, tying the game with a solo shot to left. Mike Fernandez later came up with David Fetkenher aboard to drill a two-run shot over the wall in left for the 3-1 lead.

Donald Wanner went the distance on the rubber for UTPB, giving up a single hit while walking three over seven innings. He improved to 5-4 on the season by giving up a single unearned run and rung up four Aggies on the afternoon. Wanner has now gone 25 consecutive innings without giving up an earned run, including in each of his last three starts.

Houlihan went 3-3 with a run and RBI, while Jack Miller collected a pair of hits out of the clean up spot.

Jake Albert had his best start of the season in game two. The freshman went six shutout innings with only giving up a single hit, walking none and striking out six for his second win of the season.

John Rodriguez, Garrett Lloyd and Andrew Lucas each threw a shutout inning out of the pen to close out the nine-inning shutout.

UTPB scored in five different innings in game two, taking advantage to score on three of Oklahoma Panhandle's four errors in the game. Jordan Zazulak led the Falcons with a pair of hits in four at bats, and Latrell Harris scored twice out of the leadoff spot in the order.

UTPB looks for the sweep Saturday afternoon as the two teams wrap up the series at 1 p.m.
