Falcons End Up on Wrong Side of Home Run Battle 6-5 & 9-3

A pair of home runs, one in each game at opportune times, helped St. Mary's to a series opening pair of 6-5 and 9-3 wins over UT-Permian Basin baseball Friday afternoon in San Antonio, Texas.

UT-Permian Basin baseball went deep three different times in Friday's doubleheader at St. Mary's, but the Rattlers' four home-runs helped them to a pair of 6-5 and 9-3 defeats over UTPB in San Antonio.

The Falcons built up a big lead in game one, starting with a pair of homers off the bats of Tyler Houlihan and Jack Miller in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead.

David Fetkenher and Alfred Iturralde added to the lead in the second and third, each driving in a run on an outfield single for a 4-0 advantage.

St. Mary's offense woke up in the bottom of the third to grab its first run on an RBI double, and the Rattlers went yard for the first time on the afternoon to tie the game with a 3-run home run by Bryce Brandl.

The Rattlers scored two more runs off of singles in the sixth for a 6-4 lead.

Miller was able to grab one back in the seventh with his second solo shot of the game with one out, but was the only Falcon to reach base in the team's final trip to the plate.

Miller came through for the first run of game two, giving UTPB a 1-0 early advantage in the first on a groun-out to second.

The Rattlers went ahead 3-1 with a pair of homers in the first two innings, a two-run blast in the first by Jack Kaiser and a one-run shot in the second by Donnie Perez.

Jordan Zazulak tied the game for UT-Permian Basin with RBI singles in hits trips to the plate in the third and the fifth innings with singles into the outfield.

A wild pitch scored a run to give St. Mary's the lead once again in the fifth, and Perez came through with his second dinger of the game, a three-run home run to strech the deficit out to four runs. The Rattlers added two more runs in the sixth on a two run triple.
