Baseball Slips Past Hardin-Simmons with 7-6 10th Inning Win

UT-Permian Basin edged past Hardin-Simmons when Tyler Houlihan beat out a potential inning-ending double play with the bases loaded, allowing Ryan Souza to score the winning run to give the Falcons a 7-6 win Tuesday afternoon at Roden Field.

UTPB looked to be in control of the game after scoring three runs in the fifth to go ahead 5-2. Houlihan put the Falcons up 3-1 on a single into center, and later scored on a fielder's choice for a three-run advantage. UTPB tacked on another later in the inning on an error at second.

The advantage disstpated over the next two innings when the Cowboys got one back in the sixth and took the lead with a three-run seventh inning, taking the lead after Colson Craddick hit an RBI triple and scored on a sacrifice fly.

Alex Fernandez came through in the bottom of the eighth, lining a base hit to center to drive in Bryan Van Vranken and even the game at 6-6.

Hardin-Simmons missed an opportunity for runs as the game went to extra innings, stranding its first two batters on base after a single to left and an error put a pair of Cowboys on with nobody out.

The Falcons came through in the bottom of the 10th when Alex Fernandez reached on a single to left with one out, and pinch runner Souza moved to second on a wild pitch before a pair of walks pushed him to third with one out.

Three of four Falcons to end the day with a pair of hits resided at the top of the line up, as Chase Dillon, Houlihan, Jack Miller and Fernandez each ended the 10-inning game with two hits each. Houlihan scored twice and drove in two runs, and Dillon had a pair of runs batting leadoff.

Nolan Schattel won his second game of the year in throwing the final two innings. He allowed a single hit and a HBP in the scoreless outing as one of eight pitchers used on the day.

The Falcons return to conference play on the road this weekend, traveling to San Antonio for three games at St. Mary's.
