Last inning runs proved important for the third straight game Saturday afternoon as an insurance run in the top of the ninth by UT-Permian Basin baseball ended up the game winner in a 2-1 victory over Newman in Wichita, Kan.
UTPB took the lead in the top of the second when
Jordan Zazulak struck out but reached on a wild pitch to lead off the inning. He moved over to third after a hit by pitch and a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a sac fly by
David Fetkenher to right for the 1-0 advantage.
The lead held all the way to the ninth when pinch runner
Ryan Souza stole third and later scored on a failed pick off attempt for the 2-0 lead.
The run was much needed when Newman scored a run on a fielder's choice, but the Jets left the tying run stranded on first with a game-ending ground out to second.
Chris Cano picked up the win for the Falcons, holding Newman scoreless despite giving up four hits and four walks in six innings. He struck out three in the shutout appearance.
Zach Odden threw the seventh and eighth innings with giving up only a HBP, and
