Baseball Drops Pair of One-Run Walkoff Games at Newman

UT-Permian Basin came from behind to tie both games in the final inning of scheduled action Friday afternoon, but Newman scored a pair of 7-6 and 6-5 walk off victories over the Falcons at McCarthy Field in Wichita, Kan.

UTPB tied game one when Mike Fernandez hit a two-run two-out double with the bases loaded that tied the contest at 6-6 by driving in Jack Miller and Jordan Zazulak.

But the Jets put their first two runners on base and won the game on a single back up the middle to drive in the baserunner from second.

Miller led the Falcons on offense in game one, driving in a pair and scoring twice on a 2-4 game at the plate with a double. Kevin Barnes matched his output with a pair of singles.

David Fetkenher provided the late game heroics in game two, blasting a two-run homer in the top of the ninth after Ryan Souza led off the frame by drawing a walk to tie the game at 5-5.

Newman won game two on a fly ball to right field with the bases loaded and one out to take the 7-6 win on a sacrifice fly.

Tyler Houlihan, Fetkenher and Alex Fernandez each had a two hits in game two, and Souza and Fetkenher each had a pair of runs.

UTPB looks to grab the third and final game of the conference series Saturday when the teams close out the set at 1 p.m.
