UT-Permian Basin came from behind to tie both games in the final inning of scheduled action Friday afternoon, but Newman scored a pair of 7-6 and 6-5 walk off victories over the Falcons at McCarthy Field in Wichita, Kan.
UTPB tied game one when
Mike Fernandez hit a two-run two-out double with the bases loaded that tied the contest at 6-6 by driving in
Jack Miller and
Jordan Zazulak.
But the Jets put their first two runners on base and won the game on a single back up the middle to drive in the baserunner from second.
Miller led the Falcons on offense in game one, driving in a pair and scoring twice on a 2-4 game at the plate with a double.
Kevin Barnes matched his output with a pair of singles.
David Fetkenher provided the late game heroics in game two, blasting a two-run homer in the top of the ninth after
Ryan Souza led off the frame by drawing a walk to tie the game at 5-5.
Newman won game two on a fly ball to right field with the bases loaded and one out to take the 7-6 win on a sacrifice fly.
Tyler Houlihan, Fetkenher and
Alex Fernandez each had a two hits in game two, and Souza and Fetkenher each had a pair of runs.
UTPB looks to grab the third and final game of the conference series Saturday when the teams close out the set at 1 p.m.
