Falcons Can't Get Out of Early Hole in 8-5 Loss Against Wayland Baptist

UT-Permian Basin baseball gave up four runs in the top of the first and never quite rebounded, falling 8-5 in non-conference action against Wayland Baptist Tuesday afternoon at Roden Field.

The Pioneers pieced together their four runs in the top of the first as seven straight batters reached base. WBU tallied five hits and took advantage of an error in the field for the early four-run lead.

Daniel Andrade singled into right field to put the Falcons on the board in the bottom half of the inning to score Ryan Souza, and Andrade came on in a single by Alex Fernandez to cut the Pioneers lead by half.

But they grabbed both runs back over the next two innings, scoring once in each the second and third innings to go back on top by four, 6-2.

Chase Dillon's double in the bottom of the fourth pulled UTPB back within a pair to score Jackson Pritchard and Tyler Houlihan to trail 6-4.

But UTPB still couldn't get closer than two runs and trailed by three on a solo shot home run in the top of the seventh by Gregg Veneklasen.

A Mike Fernandez single into center that drove home Souza brought the Falcons back within two, but Wayland Baptist added an insurance run in the top of the ninth for the three run victory.

Ryan Souza scored twice and walked in his first four at bats on the day out of the lead off spot in the UTPB lineup. Jack Miller and Pritchard each ended the day with a pair of base hits.

John Rodriguez stepped up out of the pen to throw seven innings, allowing a pair of runs off of five hits and a walk. He rung up six Pioneers in his longest outing of the season.

UTPB is back on the road later this week, taking on Lubbock Christian in non-conference action as part of a home-and-home set. The two teams will play another game at Roden Field this Saturday.
