UTPB Baseball picked up two more wins Saturday,using strong pitching and opportune offense on its way to earning a four game series sweep of Southern Nazarene with a 6-2 and 5-1 pair of wins at Roden Field.
The Falcons were playing from behind in game three of the weekend when they took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second.
Bryan Van Vranken tied the game on a sac fly to center, and a
Doug Clapperton double off the glove of the shortstop that rolled into left field put UTPB ahead after two.
Tied 3-3 in the fourth, the Falcons broke open with three runs in the frame. A double by Van Vranken scored
Randal Toribio to claim back the lead, and Clapperton came up with a big base hit back up the middle into center to score
Jordan Zazulak and Van Vranken for a 5-2 advantage.Â
Zazulak piled on to the total, scoring Toribio with another double in the bottom of the fifth.
THe bottom of the order did the damage for the Falcons as the 6 through 9 batters tallied six RBI, five funs and six hits.
Donald Wanner earned the win in his first apperance as a Falcon, throwing the complete game in the victory. He settled down after a first couple of wild innings, allowing just four hits and walking one while striking out seven in the seven inning outing.
UTPB received another strong debut by a pitcher in game two. Freshman
Jake Albert made his first collegiate start and appearance in taking the mound to start the game. He blanked the Crimson Storm over five innings, walking none while giving up five hits and striking out four to receive the victory.
UT-Permian Basin went ahead in the third on a Clapperton single through the gap in the right side, and added a run an inning later on a
Jack Miller fielder's choice that scored
Tyler Houlihan.
After an SNU unearned run in the sixth, UTPB responded with three insurance runs while taking advantage of a pair of errors.
The Falcons embark on a long west coast road trip this coming week, traveling to Southern California with three games against UC San Diego, a doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona and a single game against Cal State San Bernardino.
