UC San Diego Scores Late to Hand Falcons 7-6 Loss at Start of California Trip

Box Score UT-Permian Basin took the lead four different times Thursday night, but #24 UC San Diego matched it run for run in each bottom half before taking its first lead in the bottom of the eighth in a 7-6 defeat of the Falcons in La Jolla, Calif. The solo game is the first of six for UTPB over four days as the Falcons have a Friday doubleheader against the same Tritons, travel to Cal Poly Pomona for two on Saturday, and return to La Jolla for a single game against Cal State San Bernardino.

The Falcons got the scoring started when Randal Toribio walked home from third after Doug Clapperton stole second and the ball was thrown into center field on the play. Clapperton later stole third and came in on a base hit by Alex Fernandez.

Tied 2-2, Bryan Van Vranken cranked his first homer of the year in the top of the fourth to go ahead 3-2.

After a UCSD run in the bottom of the fourth, Kevin Barnes doubled with two outs to clear the bases and score Jordan Zazulak and Mike Fernandez for a 5-3 advantage.

Tied 5-5 after a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, Zazulak put UTPB on top n the seventh with a bases loaded single through the left side to plate Clapperton for the second time on the day.

UC San Diego tied the game again for the fourth time in the same inning that UTPB took the lead on its second home run of the day in the bottom of the seventh.

The Tritons scored in the bottom of the eighth on a single to right field, scoring in an inning by itself for the only time on the night what proved to be the winning run in the 7-6 game.

A. Fernandez and Zazulak each led the UTPB offense with a pair of hits. Kevin Barnes drove in a pair on the night, Clapperton scored twice to lead UTPB and M. Fernandez had a pair of walks to reach base three times in the game.

The Falcons return to the diamond Friday at 2 p.m. local time Friday afternoon for a nine inning game followed by a seven inning contest against UC San Diego.
