Falcons Rally for Wild 85-84 Overtime Win against Lubbock Christian

UT-Permian Basin men's basketball closed out its 2015-16 home schedule in dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon, rebounding from trailing by 17 to force overtime after hitting some big three pointers and pulling through late to end up on top in an 85-84 win against Lubbock Christian.

The UTPB offense sputtered in the first half as LCU held two of the Falcons' top scorers, Johnnie Lacy and Gary Akbar, scoreless on 0-7 shooting. The Chaps held UTPB to just 11-29 shooting in the opening 20 minutes while connecting on 16-26 (61.5 percent) of its attempts from the field.

The comeback started when the Falcons hit three 3-pointers over a two minute span. A pair of deep shots from Lacy with a 3-pointer from Sam Stirugs with 5:54 remaining pulled the Falcons within five at 68-63.

Another 3-pointer by Lacy at 3:20 closed the gap to a pair of points, and Stirgus hit a basket the next time down the court to pull within one at 73-72.

Trailing by three after a Lubbock Christian layup with 17 seconds remaining, Lacy connected again from deep to tie the game with 10 seconds remaining. LCU had one last attempt at a game-winner, but AJ Luckey couldn't connect around the rim to end the game in regulation.

Lubbock Christian started off hot in OT, scoring the first four points and scoring on its first three possessions, but the Falcons kept the game tied with a pair of back-to-back threes by Lacy.

Darnell Vandivort hit a basket with 1:17 in overtime to take an 85-84 lead, and the one point lead stood as Lubbock Christian missed on its final two field goals of the night.

Lacy ended the night with six 3-pointers and a team-leading 21 points with five assists. Codye Hatcher was strong all game, pouring in 19 points with nine rebounds. Akbar contributed 11 points and a team-best 12 rebounds. Stirgus added 13 points and Vandivort ended the night scoring 10 as the Falcons starting lineup all ended in double figures.

Brennen Fowler was a monster for Lubbock Christian as the freshman hit 13-15 from the field and all nine free throws to lead all players with 35 points on the afternoon.

The Falcons close out the regular season next week on the road, taking on Newman and Oklahoma Christian before heading to the Heartland Conference Championships in two weeks.
