Falcons Can't Rebound From Big First Inning in 8-6 Loss to CSU San Bernardino

UTPB Baseball looked to be in an insurmountable hole Sunday afternoon after giving up eight runs in the bottom of the first, but the Falcons gave themselves a chance, shutting out CSU San Bernardino over the final seven innings while putting up six runs, but UTPB ultimately fell short in an 8-6 loss to close out its six-game weekend in California.

Down 8-0 after the first, Latrell Harris came in on a error in right field and Alex Fernandez grounded out to short to drive in Doug Clapperton for two runs in the top of the third.

Chase Dillon drove in the team's third run in the top of the fourth on a ground out to short, plating Kevin Barnes for the team's second run of the afternoon.

UT-Permian Basin added another run in the seventh when Barnes hit a single through the left side of the infield into left field to score Jordan Zazulak to close within 8-4.

The Falcons were able to cut the Coyotes lead down to two in the ninth, scoring a pair of runs when Zazulak and Fernandez each came in on wild pitches.

Fernandez, Barnes and Jack Miller each led UTPB with a pair of hits on the afternoon, while Dillon walked a pair of times to reach base.

Nolan Schattel was strong on the mound for UTPB, entering with no outs in the first and the team down 5-0. He gave up four hits, just two in his final seven innings of action, and struck out eight while walking a lone batter.

The Falcons are back home next weekend, welcoming Adams State to Roden Field for three games next Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
