Baseball Opens Series with Pair of Losses Against Adams State

UTPB Baseball held the first lead in both games against Adams State Saturday afternoon, but couldn't hold off the Grizzlies, falling 3-2 and 9-5 at Roden Field.

Jordan Zazulak put the Falcons on the board first in the opening inning, groudning out to short to drive in Doug Clapperton for the early 1-0 lead.

The lead stood until the top of the fifth when Chris Morley hit a two-run triple to put the Grizzlies ahead 2-1. 

Deven Nelson added a third run in the sixth on a single into right field for a 3-1 advantage.

The Falcons grabbed one back in the sixth when Mike Fernandez was plunked with the bases loaded, but UTPB missed an opportunity to add more runs and left the bases loaded.

Chris Cano was solid on the mound, throwing seven innings with three runs allowed, two earned, off of six hits with eight strikeouts. He walked none in the compete game.

The Falcons started out on top again in game two, scoring once in each of the first two innings on a sac fly by Fernandez and taking a 2-0 lead on a Morgan Munguia single into left.

Tied 2-2 after Adams State scored twice in the fourth, UTPB went back ahead 3-2 when Fernandez scored on a wild pitch.

Adams State broke out the offense in the fifth, scoring twice off of a pair of hits and on two different wild pitches to lead 6-3.

Jack Miller pulled the Falcons back within a run on a two-run double, scoring Daniel Andrade and Zazulak in the bottom half of the inning.

The Grizzlies added to their lead in the top of the eighth, adding three more runs on a pair of run-scoring hits.

The teams close out the three game set Sunday afternoon, with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
