UTPB men's basketball picked up its first road win in four games Saturday afternoon, grabbing a 73-59 victory against St. Mary's in San Antonio.
Gary Akbar and
Codye Hatcher paced the Falcons, each recording double-doubles on the day.
UTPB took the lead for good with a seven-point run after baskets by
Anthony Knight and
Gary Akbar capped by three straight free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt by
Johnnie Lacy with 7:34 to play.
Another seven point run, featuring a 3-pointer by
Darnell Vandivort and 3-point play from Akbar put UTPB ahead by double digits 61-49 with just 4:38 remaining.
St. Mary's was never able to get closer than nine points over the final five minute as UTPB wrapped up the win to snap a three-game losing streak.
Akbar led UTPB with 16 points and 14 rebounds while Hatcher wasn't far behind in both categories, scoring 15 with 10 boards. Lacy had 13 points while Knight added 11 off the bench on 5-7 shooting.
UTPB showed up to play on defense in the second half, holding St. Mary's to 7-36 shooting (19.4 percent).
UTPB is back at home this coming weekend, hosting Oklahoma Panhandle State Thursday night at 7:30.
