UT Permian Basin football found the endzone six different times Saturday night but were unable to hold off Oklahoma Panhandle State after the Aggies score the first two TDs of the night in a 54-44 loss at Grande Communications Stadium in Midland.
Kameron Mathis ended the night throwing for 322 yards on 27-49 passing with four touchdowns, the first coming on 4th-and-8 from the OPSU 42-yard line as
Jake Anglin made it to the end zone to cut a 14-0 deficit in half.
The Falcons got rushing touchdowns from
Jason McAfee (nine yards) and Marquise Simmons (five yards), and held the Aggies scoreless in the second quarter to trail by a point at 21-20 heading into halftime.
The teams traded scoring drives in the second half, with Oklahoma Panhandle State scoring first after halftime and getting the last touchdown of the night.
UTPB threw for three touchdowns in the final 30 minutes and hit a 35 yard field goal by
Bailey Giffen.
Mathis connected with
Mitchell Leonard twice on touchdowns, once from a yard out and the second time for a 45-yard strike.
He later found
Kristian Brown for a 33-yard strike on possibly the team's best touchdown of the season; a one-handed grab over his head as Brown fell out of the back of the endzone that pulled UTPB within four points at 48-44.
But OPSU recovered an onside kick and drove 69 yards over eight plays to wrap up the win on a seven-yard touchdown rush.
Oklahoma Panhandle State threw for 610 yards on the night, out-gaining the Falcons 750 yards to 523 on the night.Aggie QB Shane Truelove completed 40-49 passes with four scores in the air while Devyn Williams led all receivers in the game with 223 yards on 10 receptions.
Jordan Williams led the Falcons with 78 yards on 15 carries, and
Terrell Davidson had 85 yards on eight catches for UTPB.
UT Permian Basin is back on the road next weekend, traveling to Wichita Falls for a Saturday night contest at Midwestern State.Â
