Last Second 3-Pointer Helps Hilltoppers to OT Victory

Johnnie Lacy hit eight straight free throws down the stretch in the second half and give the UT-Permian Basin men's basketball team an 86-83 lead with eight seconds remaining, but James Taylor hit a three from the top of the arc to send the game to overtime where St. Edward's outscored the Falcons 21-7 in a 107-93 overtime defeat Thursday night in Odessa.

UTPB led for much of the first half and by as many as seven points after an eight point run capped by a layup from Gary Akbar to put the Falcons on top 13-6. St. Edward's came back to take the lead late in the half, by as many as five points, and went into halftime with a 41-38 advantage.


St. Edward's led for most of the second half, but the Falcons grabbed the late lead when Lacy hit a pair at the line and 46 seconds remaining in the half to go ahead 82-81.

Lacy hit four free throws the team's next two trips down the court to retake the lead and extend it out to 86-83 before St. Edward's tied the game to send it to OT.

The Hilltoppers scored the first five points of overtime and the Falcons never were able to get closer than three points away. St. Edward's ended the night by scoring the final six points of the game at the free throw line in the 14 point win.

Lacy led all players on the night with 30 points, hitting 14-16 at the free throw line. Akbar double-doubled with 21 points and 13 rebounds on the evening and a team high three assists. Anthony Knight added 19 points on 6-8 shooting as one of four Falcons in double figures, and Codye Hatcher had 11 rebounds and 10 points.

Taylor paced the Hilltoppers with 20 points as one of five St. Edward's players in double figures.
