Box Score 2 UTPB Volleyball opened its 2015 season Friday afternoon with a pair of 3-0 (25-21, 25-8, 25-9) and 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 15-25, 16-25) losses against weekend host Angelo State and Western New Mexico in San Angelo, Texas.
The Falcons struggled against host Angelo State but took a lead at 8-7 in the first set of the contest when they put together five straight points to go on top on a kill from
Rachel Dixon.
UTPB later went ahead 14-13 on a kill from
Caitlyn Guajardo and grabbed a 17-16 advantage later on an ace from Guajardo.
Angelo State broke a close set open at the end, breaking away with four of the final five points to take a 25-21 first set win.
The Rambelles took over in the second and third sets, limiting the Falcons to just 17 combined points in the three-set win.
Guajardo had nine kills to lead the UTPB attack, while
Brittney Griffith led all players with four kills.
Ariana Gallardo recorded 14 assists and
Marina Salazar had 11 digs for UTPB.
UTPB came out stronger later in the day against Western New Mexico, scoring the first three points of the day and seven of eight to start the match to go on top 7-1. The Falcons held off a couple late pushes by the Mustangs, including a four-point rally with the Falcons facing match point as
Puava Tulau ended the first set at 25-22.
Western New Mexico turned the tables in the second in racing out to a 5-1 lead that the Falcons were never able to recover from. UTPB pulled within a point at 5-6, but soon found themselves behind 7-15 in the eventual six-point set loss.
The Mustangs used big runs early on in the third and fourth sets to control the pace of each of the remaining sets in the four-set win.
Hannah Rebb paced UTPB with 10 winners in the late-afternoon contest and
Morgann Davis led all players in the match with eight blocks.
Jordan McDonald had 19 digs for UTPB and Gallardo ended the match with 18 assists.
The Falcons play two more times in San Angelo, taking on Tarleton State at 10 a.m. Saturday morning before returning against Chadron State at 4 p.m.
