Falcons Strong, Close out Regular Season with 11-2 Win over LCU

UTPB Baseball put an exclamation point on an extremely successful regular season Saturday afternoon, taking the series over Lubbock Christian in a 11-2 victory over the Chaps in the second annual Falcon Strong game at Roden Field.

The Falcons came back from LCU getting a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first, coming back with four in the bottom of the second. Bryan Van Vranken singled down the line into left to bring home Ty Morgan and Daniel Andrade. Base hits by Matt Reyes and Colin Kowal helped the Falcons turn the tables and leave the inning with a 4-2 lead.

UTPB repeated its success in the bottom of the third, getting four more runs to score an 8-2 advantage. Van Vranken drove home his second of the afternoon with a single into the gap between short and third to plate Morgan. Andrade came home during Alfred Iturralde's at bat on a wild pitch, and Van Vranken and Iturralde later both scored on a double to right by Randal Toribio.

The Falcons added a run in the bottom of the fourth when Andrade singled to right to bring home Morgan Munguia and increase their lead out to 9-2.

Van Vranken drove home Munguia in the sixth, and an infield single back to the pitcher in the eighth to score Ryan Souza by Travis Sims capped the scoring to give UTPB an 11-2 lead.

Chris Cano won his ninth game of the season, allowing a pair of unearned runs on five hits with four strikeouts. The sophomore walked none in the five inning appearance.

Van Vranken paced the UTPB offense, driving in three and scoring two times on a 3-4 afternoon at the plate. Andrade added a pair of runs and an RBI on three hits in five at-bats as the Falcons had five players with multiple hits.

The Falcons move on to next week's Heartland Conference Tournament having finished the year winning six of nine conference series and finishing with a 19-8 record in Heartland Conference contests. UTPB, the three-seed entering the three-day tournament, play second-seed St. Edward's Thursday at Dickson Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
