UTPB baseball came up on the wrong end of a pair of tightly-contested contests Sunday afternoon in two 10-8 and 10-9 losses against Newman in Heartland Conference action in Odessa.
Colin Kowal evened the opener at - in the bottom of the fourth, driving in
Randal Toribio on a base hit through the right side of the infield.
Newman broke the tie in a big way in the topof the fourth, scoring eight runs in the frame to grab a nine-1 lead.
The Falcons came back, scoring three in the bottom of the fifth when
David Lee drove in
David Fetkenher and
Matt Reyes on a double to right center, and Lee later scored on a double from Brian Van Vranken.
UTPB answered a run from Newman in the sixth with two of its won as Toribio singled to score
Daniel Andrade and came in on a triple to right by Reyes.
The Falcons closed within two when
Kevin Barnes scored Van Vranken and Lee on a double to left, but left the tying run at the plate in the two-run loss.
The Falcons got on the board first in game two, scoring in the first inning when Lee drove in Kowal on a ground out to short.
After Newman took a 4- lead with four runs in the third,
Matt Reyes put UTPB back in the lead on one swing with his first home run of the season, a grand slam, to put the Falcons ahead 5-4.
UTPB scored the next three runs, getting one when Kowal singled on a bunt down the first base line to bring in
Ty Morgan. Â Lee then singled into center, driving home both Kowal and Reyes for an 8-4 lead.
The advantage was short-lived as Newman erased the deficit its next time at the plate with a four-run seventh to tie the game at 8-8.
The Jets scored the game's next runs in the ninth, taking a 9-8 lead on a sacrifice fly and going ahead by two on a single back up the middle.
Andrade got one back for UTPB, hitting a comebacker up the middle to plate Van Vranken and trail 10-9, but the Falcons left the winning run stuck on first to end the game.
The Falcons and Jets close out the seires Monday afternoon when the teams head back to Roden Field at 2 p.m.
